I’d love to say yes I have one, but…….
I am sure most of you have heard this question or even been asked the question this past week. Why are we so drawn to a resolution when most of us dread change? Personally, change is always hard especially when there are so many factors and unknowns feeding it. Honestly, I have never been successful with a resolution at the beginning of the year and I have to ask myself, “Why?”
I decided to look up the definition of resolution and was reminded that it is a noun meaning a firm decision to do or not to do something and/or a quality of being determined or resolute. Okay, I don’t know about you but even saying yes to a resolution means I’ve made a decision and it’s final. The end expectation is set.
But wait, I remember Yoda once said, “Do or not do. There is no try.” Also, I remember Jesus also instructed John to write a message to the church in Laodicea. He said, “I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!” Rev 3:15-16
No wonder a resolution never works for me. I prematurely set the end result and my expectation precedes my success or failure in getting there. Action is necessary as both Yoda and Jesus confirm in the paragraph above.
What I have been missing is so obvious but my perception clouds it. Just because I say yes to the resolution doesn’t do anything for me. Rather acknowledging my weakness and accepting I need to do something to affect change is what I am saying yes to. The radical thing is that Luke and the church in Laodicea didn’t have to do it alone. If you watch Star Wars or when you read the Bible you will see this.
Change is a sustainable lifestyle adjustment that must be constantly and consistently reviewed and modified based on controllable and uncontrollable circumstances. The process in creating change is a journey that can last for a season of life or for a lifetime.
Note that a resolution is simply a noun while the words change, process and journey are not only nouns but also verbs. Action is always needed as we journey together.
So, I’d love to say yes to a New Year Resolution but I have deepened my YES to affect change as I journey with 413 Fitness to accomplish goals and enjoy the ride getting there. Will you join me in 2021 as we roadmap our fitness together?
Happy New Year!
